Our history
Xoma in Brief
Xoma AB is a system provider of multitrophic aquaculture systems, primarily in saltwater environments. Xoma has also begun establishing its cultivation facility for macroalgae farming.
Regarding algae cultivation, we provide advanced and controlled environments to promote rapid growth and nutrient-rich production. Our systems enable carefully monitored and optimized cultivation conditions, including lighting, temperature, nutrient solutions, and carbon dioxide levels. Our systems allow our customers to cultivate high-quality algae for use in food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and other industrial applications.
We offer tailored solutions that meet our customers' specific needs and goals. We work closely with our customers to understand their requirements and deliver customized cultivation systems that meet their expectations. Sustainability is a central part of our operations. We actively work to minimize environmental impact by using resource-efficient methods, recycling water, and minimizing the use of chemicals. We strive to be a responsible player and promote a more sustainable future for the algae industry.
In summary, Xoma is a reliable partner for those interested in sustainable algae cultivation. Our customized cultivation systems, expertise, and commitment to sustainability make us the optimal choice to meet market demands and contribute to a more sustainable future.
Business Idea
Xoma's business idea is to deliver sustainable and efficient cultivation systems for producing and selling high-quality algae. Our unique CLAS technology offers our customers customized solutions that promote sustainable cultivation, reduce environmental impact, and increase profitability. In addition to providing cultivation systems, we also focus on selling the algae produced, creating additional revenue streams, and strengthening our position in the market as a technology supplier and high-quality algae products.
Goals and Vision
Goal: To become the leading provider of sustainable algae cultivation systems and establish our products in the global market. We strive to build a solid customer base by offering innovative and environmentally friendly solutions that meet market needs. Vision: Our vision is to transform the food industry by making sustainable algae cultivation accessible and profitable for everyone. We aim to contribute to a greener and more sustainable future where algae is central to meeting the world's needs for nutritious and environmentally friendly products.
Technology and Innovation
Xoma has developed a fully circular CLAS (Closed Loop Aquaculture System). Inspired by aquaponics, where vegetables are grown alongside fish, Xoma has developed a system for cultivating algae. In this way, we avoid nutrient runoff, which leads to eutrophication, and eliminate the risk of spreading parasites and diseases. Another advantage of CLAS is that it produces an additional premium product: algae. Algae are an excellent food source and the only equivalent alternative to omega-3 from fish. Algae are the source of omega-3, which marine animals then consume. Like those growing in our oceans, our algae are also free from heavy metals and environmental toxins.
Finally, CLAS cultivation requires no permits for water discharge, does not need to be near the sea, and has lower energy requirements than systems like RAS or Biofloc.
Cultivation Facility
CLAS is an advancement of a well-proven cultivation system, RAS, where water is mechanically filtered, and ammonium and nitrite are broken down into nitrate. Water changes may be needed at high nitrate levels, typically leading to water usage of 3–10% per day. With the CLAS system, no such water changes are required, significantly reducing water consumption by up to 99% and energy consumption. We plan to build a reference facility, which is expected to be completed in Q2 2025. Our technology is based on a scalable and modular concept, allowing the system to be easily adapted and expanded. The containers in the CLAS system ensure a controlled environment 24/7, which is crucial for maintaining stable production, regardless of external factors such as wind and weather. This ensures that we can consistently produce high-quality algae that meet market demands. Additionally, we will launch fully automated production facilities in 2025, further streamlining and optimizing our production process.
Demo Module and Reference Facility
We plan to build a reference facility, which is expected to be completed in Q2 2025. This facility is not only a demonstration of our technology's capabilities but also an essential milestone in our long-term strategy. With an annual production capacity of 32 tons of algae, the facility will serve as a reference to demonstrate the system's economics and functionality on a larger scale. Using our advanced CLAS technology (Closed Loop Aquaculture System), the facility will exemplify how sustainable and efficient production can be while minimizing resource use and environmental impact. In addition to being a model for future projects, the facility is also expected to generate significant cash flow. This cash flow will come from the sale of the algae and potential collaborations and licensing of our technology to other industry players. The facility will become a central part of our business strategy and a strong argument for attracting further investments and partnerships. By offering a concrete demonstration of how our technology works in practice, we are confident that we can accelerate market acceptance and thus secure a leading position in the rapidly growing algae industry.
Business Model
Xoma provides systems for the local cultivation of sustainable, organic, and toxin-free algae. The global demand for algae is steadily growing, driven by their nutritional value and versatile uses in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Despite this demand, the algae industry faces significant challenges. One of the biggest causes of environmental pollution is the high toxins that often occur in algae cultivated in polluted marine areas. Additionally, strict environmental regulations in many countries, including Sweden, make obtaining permits for water discharge from aquaculture is difficult.
Xoma has developed a fully scalable and circular system, CLAS (Closed Loop Aquaculture System), to address these issues. This innovative system eliminates the need for discharge permits by fully circulating and purifying the water used in cultivation. The CLAS technology ensures that no harmful substances are released into the environment, protecting nature and ensuring that the produced algae are entirely free from toxins. By cultivating algae in a controlled and closed environment, we can produce high-quality, organic algae that are safe for both consumers and the environment.
Furthermore, the CLAS system's modular and scalable design allows cultivation capacity to be easily adapted and expanded, making it an ideal solution for small and large cultivation operations. This will enable Xoma to meet the growing demand for sustainable algae products and lead toward a more environmentally friendly and responsible future for the algae industry. Our business model includes the sale of customized cultivation systems, services, and support, as well as the sale of algae.
